TWINS PEAK

I have a twin brother. Very few people know this for one or more of the following reasons: 1. He lives all the way back in South Carolina. 2. He is much better looking than me, and I don’t need the competition. 3. We stopped talking years ago after I booby trapped his bunk bed. 4. If we are not more than 60 miles apart we can feel each other’s pain ... and he's clumsy and gets hurt alot.

We were like most twins in high school; we shared similar hobbies and we were mentally scarred from having to wear the same clothes as children. I am particularly in tune to the twin thing right now because of the careers of Julie and Nancy Augustyniak who play professional soccer for the Atlanta Beat. My brother and I were high school atheletes and I see an amazing parallel with the Augustiniak twins. Through high school they shared a car and my brother and I did also. They are from Georgia and went to college in South Carolina and We were from South Carolina and I went to college in Georgia. They were fans of MTV VJ, Kennedy and we were fans of Ford’s sister company, Lincoln.

So stirred by these eerie similarities, I contacted the Mary-Kate and Ashley of Women’s Soccer to see just how connected we all were. After all, my brother and I once combined to score 50 points in a basketball game. Even though he scored 46 and I score only 4, it is that team, twin effort that counts, that ying & yang of competition. So, I asked the sporty sisters some questions and here are their responses (They even answered together!!):

Q. What is the greatest thing about playing now, for the Atlanta Beat? A. Being placed in the same category as some of the best players in the world.

Q. What it the most shocking fact of life you have learned since becoming professional atheletes? A. The hardest realization that we’ve come to is the high demands of being a professional athlete on and off the field. It is a never-ending battle both physically and mentally.

Q. When you were at Clemson, did you ever yank your shirt off to expose nothing but your sports bra? Did you ever do it while playing soccer? A. No because we didn't want to take the attention away from Brandi's (Chastain) rock hard abs.

Q. What is your favorite junk food? A. Julie-chocolate and Nancy-sour candy

Q. I don't know much about women's soccer, but is it true you get to use your hands and use a large, squishy nerfball? A. Apparently you have never watched a game of soccer in your life. Maybe if you came out to one of our games you would learn what soccer is really about.

Q. If you were going to hurt me(especially after the last question), would you kick me, or give me one of those spike head shots? and why? A.First of all you need to work on your soccer terminology. Second of all, we would choose the "spike head shot" to knock some soccer sense into you.

Q. On average, how many questions does it usually take before an interviewer asks you, if you two have every switched places on a date, or with boyfriends without them knowing? A. It's the first question out of every persons mouth following the questions "Are you guys twins?" and "If one gets hurt does the other feel it?

Q. I have a 5 year old daughter, what advice would you give her about growing up as a girl in the world? A. Our advice to any young girl growing up in the world is to be independent and to be able to stick up for yourself and what you believe in.
